THE ROADRUNNER AND THE RABBIT

source

The roadrunner runs
Zigzagging down the driveway
He jumps through the bougainvillea bush
In a flash he emerges victorious
A cute sweet motionless baby rabbit
Dangles from his beak as he disappears
Into the desert

Somewhere Darwin continues vigilance
Hoping he can witness promises of evolution
I watch too but wistfully
Glad the roadrunner obeys rules of survival
Yet sad for the tiny rabbit so respectful of nature
My animal self understands
My intelligent self remains perplexed
Wondering how humans can be predators to nature itself
Thinking
They know better than any animal

Somewhere Darwin too shrugs holding back tears

  1. Myrna, this is SUPERB. My favourite poem today. I depressed myself writing mine. You have totally nailed our human dilemma. It is hard to know all we know. Darwin must have gnashed his teeth into little stubs ages ago. Great question: how can humans be predators to nature itself?

  3. ....Wondering how humans can be predators to nature itself
You said it all with this one line. How, indeed?

  4. Tears here too.
A brilliant poem. And a sad truth.

  5. Myrna,

A most thought provoking poem. Your wisdom says it all.
Humans have managed to destroy their very own planet and have not yet wakened up to that horrific fact. Vigilance might just give a short time to acknowledge that...

  6. This is an excellent poem. Told in a way we can all understand, yet asks the bigger questions?

  7. Lol. The rabbit isn't respectful, it is just being a rabbit

  8. This really is a wonderful post Myrna. We are animals like so many on Earth but are a disgrace with our greed and wastefulness. The Roadrunner survives and the Rabbits abound because of multiple births yet we destroy not to exist but to amass wealth that benefits few.

  9. There are so many things to ponder about in this poem. I like the watchful roadrunner, & Darwin. I feel Nature too is watchful. In no time humans would be turned into baby rabbits if needs be. Humans better behave themselves instead of acting as predators to Nature.

  10. Your roadrunner has given me back my balance this morning, Myrna! I love the image of him jumping through the bougainvillea bush and emerging victorious – poor baby rabbit, though – and obeying the rules of survival. I’m sure Darwin would shed tears to see what humans are doing to nature.

  13. Enjoyable reading, Myrna, especially the first stanza. Poor little rabbit. Around here, Katy. Texas, rabbits and alligators are protected species because they were on the land before it developed. The rabbits get run over and caught in swimming pool debris traps.
