Miami Clouds

My husband and I recently went on a wonderful vacation.  During part of it, we spent a few days in Miami - a beautiful city with stunning beaches.  I wrote some of this poem while lounging on a beach absorbing the scene.

Puffy clouds hover over Miami
Like a protective parent on the beach,
Smiling as the sun dares children
To chase ocean waves
The way we all chase happiness.
Always, hoping there's no crash,
Only splashes making us laugh,
Though waves, like fate, may surprise us.

Tall buildings compete
With the height of clouds in the sky.
Are there not laws of gravity
Setting limits on defying nature?
Are there not predictions about strong storms
Wrestling with Miami's structures
Built on sand?

Questions dissipate
Though answers begin forming
Like the shapes of clouds.
But I allow them to flow away
Because now
I want no queries, no worries or negative truths
For now
I'll indulge in fascination,
Blessing the city's beauty,
It's Latin American flair,
The spirit of its people.
For now, I'll observe, accepting
That I'm a simple tourist
Like the puffy clouds
Who will move on.

  1. Love how you ponds the contrasts between the sea and the clouds, the people and the concrete of buildings... sometimes we just have to focus on the beauty though

  2. Sometimes we need to set aside our awareness of the difficulties, and just enjoy what is, while we can. It sounds wonderful, the beauty, the ocean, the laughter, the music.

  5. Beautifully penned. Awe and wonder are much more comfortable to spend time with than the negative emotions. Hugs.

  8. Moving on is not a bad thing, especially when your time in one place has come to an end, or if you have itchy feet.

  15. I think some of us are hard-wired towards introspection and mulling over serious thoughts even when on vacation. It'd take me awhile too, to just relax and be, though an Inca Kola and some platanos fritos would help the process along considerably.

  18. I love this line: The way we all chase happiness. Always, hoping there's no crash. The ending is perfect. I think the skyscrapers are jealous.

  20. I love the energy I get out of this poem, Myrna. The way it doesn't shy from reminding us that things can go wrong (and often do), but every now and again, we must focus on the wonder, on the good, on what feeds our soul... For, in the end, is the only thing that keeps us going, that keeps us appreciating the gifts.
