THE THINKER

Pensive, pondering
He wonders
In wordless thoughts:
Serenity, happiness, fulfillment,
(all their antonyms too).
In the vacuum of his mind
Nebulous questions also lurk:
I think... I am?
I am... I think?

A psuedo-philosophic entry for Poets and Storytellers United.

  1. My mind seems to take similar turns on some nights.

  2. I am always struck by how closely gorillas resemble humans - especially when they ponder like this. I once saw one in the San Diego Zoo and his glance was so human it was unnerving - I believe they are thinking animals, at least to some degree - what must they think of being captive and having humans coming around to stare at them? I can sort of imagine. Wonderful drawing, too.

  3. I firmly believe that other animals do think. And feel.
I have had those same last nebulous questions in my mind more than once.

  5. I would love to be able to read some of the animal's thoughts. "The Thinker"? I have always loved him on first sight, he was a life sized copy of Rodin's bronze parked at the pedestrian entrance to our college library. We visited the Rodin Museum in Paris, they have some of the ordinals and castings of all that has been known.
Nice to read your post and I'll peek at more writings while I'm here. BTW, Mrs. Jim is also a retired Social Worker, we live in Texas.

  6. A poem for the times. These days of misinformation and change, in particular, thoughts (about ourselves and the world) aren't as clear or definite as we might want.

I really like the circular nature of the closing lines.

  8. I read the poem before I really looked at the illustration – how wonderful they are together! I love the shifts of meaning in the last two lines.

I wrote a thesis on Descartes light years ago. The monkey would know more about it than I do now:)
