As if never is a place
In time's non-existence
So that by mere exclamation
We can rest
Assured
That lessons learned
Are eternal
But time is an incompetent teacher
Unable to engrave marks on its own story
Instead like a child who enjoys the same book
over and over
Time repeats
Stories of disasters in a world deranged
Like the story of now
Again
Some are convinced that subjugation
Is necessary for their own elevation
While we, (the sane?) protest
Because we're convinced
This time we change
Humanity can rearrange
Time's never ending story
To be repeated time and time again
( For Dverse poets where Grace asks us to write a protest poem.)
Keeping hope alive for a wrinkle in time that interrupts the same old story...
ReplyDeleteHow sad that we never seem to learn our history lessons and we are bound to keep on repeating them. At the same time, this also tells us that no actions have been done to resolved them. Good to read you again Myrna. Hope all is well.
ReplyDeleteLovely to read you, my friend.......humanity can rearrange the story, if we wish it........and if we hurry.
ReplyDeleteI really like this poem!
ReplyDeleteBut time is an incompetent teacher
Unable to engrave marks on its own story
This is such a great analogy to history repeating... Well done.
My dad served in WWII. We lived a simple victory like. Confident of being secure. Your words show a contrast, as the photos did of two very different worlds.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. Though rather than time being an incompetent teacher I would classify us as distracted, unwilling, failing students.
ReplyDelete'time is an incompetent teacher' - and we are seemingly incompetent pupils. Hopefully this time we will learn. I love this extended metaphor.
ReplyDeleteI think you’re right, Myrna, ‘time is an incompetent teacher’, but many human beings are reluctant learners and happy to repeat the same thing over again, good or bad, until someone gives them something different. It’s up to us eager learners to present them with alternatives.
ReplyDelete"Time is an incompetent teacher" .... what a wise phrase! Please, Lord, that those of us who remember can avert repetition!
ReplyDeleteWell said.
ReplyDeleteLoved this
ReplyDelete"But time is an incompetent teacher unable to engrave marks on its own story,".. this is so poignant! Gorgeously rendered, Myrna!
ReplyDeleteWell done, Myrna. I love the start of this.
ReplyDeleteI fear even more that we learn the wrong things from the past... it will be even worse this time I fear.
