I'm an animal who hungers and thirsts
For comfort first,
But then with belly full, I search
To quench my curiosity.
Why is the world so ugly and so beautiful?
Why am I that way too?
Is my mind a blessing or curse,
Convincing me of right and wrong,
then judging what I choose?
Do questions define me?
Is my humanity a complex puzzle with no edges,
Each piece creating a need for more definition
Of a picture expanding infinitely
Into a world without end?
Dare I say, Amen?
(For Poets United where Susan challenges us to write about humanity.)
Yes, dare, dare! I that we satiate hunger for food, but curiosity goes on and on. I question, therefore I am.
ReplyDeleteBlessing or curse...the mind is our cross to bear. A complex puzzle, for sure. These questions are filled with wisdom 😊
ReplyDeleteLots of wisdom and well written Yes I believe that we are given a choice to choose between right or wrong. I love the puzzle with no edges and I dare say Amen
ReplyDeleteWonderful!
ReplyDeleteI wrestle with similar questions and, given the situation at the southern border, am at a loff for words about humans at the moment. You have written this well.
ReplyDeleteAs humans we are complex creatures. I too hunger and thirst for many answers to the questions of life. Perhaps, it doesn't become clear until we enter the spiritual world.
ReplyDeleteIt has occurred to me that there really are no answers. It's a disturbing thought, but if it's true, then I (and you and you and you) have to come to grips with it.
DeleteDid I detect a politically incorrect reference there?:)
ReplyDeleteYou'll be strung up in the future for that.
The answers are in Summa Theologica (3,500 pages)written in 1265.It took 200 years to get it published...well worth the wait:)Better get it now before it is banned as subversive literature by cultural marxists.
"Do questions define me?" I think they do as we are thinking animals first then thinking humans. Really love how a real human being evolves slowly in your lines as we come to the close.
ReplyDeleteAn intriguing thought and post. Some days I don't much like my species, and other days I am reminded of quite a lot of good. And keep seeking answers.
ReplyDelete'I'm an animal who hungers and thirsts
ReplyDeleteFor comfort first,
But then with belly full, I search
To quench my curiosity' - so well put, Myrna!
I've often wondered if my mind is a blessing or curse, and I love the analogy of humanity as 'a complex puzzle with no edges'.
At times I think mankind is a mistake of nature like a Dodo bird that couldn't fly so became extinct. That may be the way we are headed as our brain has become so clever that reason and compassion are being eliminated from it.
ReplyDeletepicture expanding infinitely... love that thought.. humanity has to be larger than we can even imagine.
ReplyDeleteConvincing me of right and wrong,
ReplyDeletethen judging what I choose?
One is given the leeway to choose but it will not be that simple to accomplish or to overcome!
Hank
Your second stanza is perfect, so well said...complex, it is true. xoxo
ReplyDeleteOnly humans have the abiity to question. Indeed, perhaps this ability is an integral part of humanity.
