WHAT IF

source

Switching TV channels I stumbled
On a scene of two men singing to a tree
Don't know what they advertised
They made awful sounds
But made me wonder
Can the tree hear them? Feel them?

What if I sang to a tree?
Expressed my love, admiration, appreciation?
Would it know?
That I'm one of those "good guys"
With a bleeding heart that throbs
With anticipated grief
Over a menacing future
Where people like me
Do not sing love songs
To each other
Or to trees
Because everything changes

What if I sang to a tree?
Would I know?
That it too sings to me
About its loving roots and branches
Strongly reaching towards all others
Without imagining destiny
Because everything changes

  1. I like to think the tree would sing along. Songs create vibrations of energy that are felt in outreaching areas. I say "sing to the trees Myrna"

  2. It sounds as if you already know! Yes, of course trees are sentient and responsive beings. (Science is finally catching up with this knowledge.) I like the progression in these differing verses.

  4. This is really beautiful. I especially like this section:

"With a bleeding heart that throbs
    With anticipated grief
    Over a menacing future
    Where people like me
    Do not sing love songs
    To each other
    Or to trees"

  5. The idea of singing to a tree makes me smile! I would guess that the trees would be overjoyed to be surrounded by song!

  7. How beautiful to think of singing to a tree. I believe they do listen and also feel our energies. I think they tremble in fear at the chain saws. Love this poem, Myrna.

  8. An intriguing piece. I think - unlike many of the noises humans make - it would not do any harm and it likely would do some good ... for you and the tree. A very cool 'What If', well rendered, Myrna.

  9. Being a tree climber and a player of my violin for them, I can tell you trees both hear and feel!

  10. Yes the tree sings to you whether you do it or not. Her whispering song is one I love and I often find myself sitting with her or with her many sisters enjoying her recital it is so relaxing.

  12. I wonder so how much that changes, but sometimes also how much is just the same... singing with a tree sounds wonderful

One gets the satisfaction of communicating and a relief perhaps from tensions then brewing.Yes, it may be useful, Myrna!
