It dashed across the desert
Leroy tried to spring after it
But I held tight his leash
I know the truth of dogs and rabbits
They know their truth of predator and prey
I can identify with both
Sometimes instinctively, fearfully I run
from pain of truth
Sometimes I have the tendency to chase it
Crunch it between my teeth
Let it ooze its vital juices
Down my open gulping throat
Wanting only to quench my thirst
Uncaring weather I devour life-giving flesh
or the poison of a rabid rabbit
I won't let Leroy chase rabbits
Though impulsively he'll always try
Me, I'll keep trying to not be a rabbit
I'd rather be the chaser
Trying always to break loose from that tether
That keeps stopping me

Great Myrna and super finish too with the idea of the tether - very poetic...
ReplyDeleteWow! Trying to break free of the tether - our life's journey........a powerful poem, my friend.
ReplyDeleteI really love what you did with the breaking that leash... super.
ReplyDeleteThis is so beautifully deep and wise..!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful - and I so hope that you, and we, can break those tethers...
ReplyDeleteAh, the jack rabbit does know the truth of predator and prey. The truth of life. Perhaps we are all, in one way or another, like jack rabbits.
ReplyDeletePowerful and lovely poem. It must have been cool to see.
ReplyDeleteI loved you using yourself to associate with both predator and prey. I was able to get right inside the poem.
ReplyDeletePredator or prey: life's primordial reality. A powerful piece, brilliantly penned.
ReplyDeleteWonderful write. True for all of us, that movement between predator and prey.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth
how trapped we are in this world of predator and prey...we're born to break free of the leash...powerful lines Myrna...
ReplyDeleteLovely combination of the physical/immediate and the reflective.
ReplyDeleteWhat a reminder, Myrna. Daily life event turns into reflection of life...
ReplyDeleteI sometimes do my best thinking when walking my dog too. I really enjoyed this.
ReplyDeleteNicely done! Love the idea, I can see you as the chaser...I love to see a Jack, I don't see them often.
ReplyDeleteVery well written, I thought the comparison to the rabbit and what life can be like was cleverly put.
ReplyDeleteGreat insight about how you can identify with both because sometimes you run from the pain of truth.
ReplyDeleteVery wisely put! The comparison is so true!
