I promised myself
I'd stop
Forgetting
How to love
It's hard
My friend
My neighbor
My enemy
My self
All make me mad
With inconsistencies
Things I disapprove
Disagree, distrust
Or simply dislike
Today I'll try again
But love needs to know
That although it's a lot
About giving
In to compromise
I sometimes give
The most by sticking
Tightly to my
NO!

Yes, sometimes we have to give to ourselves, and take a break from giving to others..........wise words, Myrna.
ReplyDeleteLove the subtle wisdom reflecting in the poem. I agree with you, Myrna.
ReplyDeleteAmen to that! I much prefer consensus to compromise, and loving "despite" requires a spiritual strength that mere compromise doesn't cover. I persist in moving toward the love, but it's draining for sure.
ReplyDeleteI agree, sometimes we have to listen to what our instincts tell us to do. Beautifully expressed.
ReplyDeleteLots of love,
Sanaa
Love this.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you have to just stick to that "no."
No is one of the most important words we can use to show our love - it gets misjudged as cold and heartless but as your poem concludes - it is far from that
ReplyDeleteThere are those cases...but just maybe there will be a yes given on something else... compromise is also giving and taking... so No can be a compromise if you zoom out.
ReplyDeleteNo is such a powerful and underused word. And sometimes a very positive force for good.
ReplyDeleteGreat poem. Thank you.
So true, loved the shifting tone here.
ReplyDeleteAgree. Tough love is real love . It is easier to say yes. So many parents are terrified to say NO because they think their children wont love them not understanding you cannot really love anyone you do not respect.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a "No" when you feel the hurt or loss by an offered solution. I am with you with that one.
ReplyDeletesigh...it's indeed a learning process you've so wisely and honestly captivated....
ReplyDeleteYes ..where do we draw the line... nicely done!
