DARE

Dare we imagine nature has consciousness
That humans are not as special as we think
That nature knows itself in its own unique way
Dare we suspect that its existence and ours
is a bang of mystery full of questions like dust
Dare we accept that nature too, marvels
At itself and us

Dare we see nature as our elder
Dare we trust its wisdom
Dare we think it sees us too
As it forgives our ignorance

Dare we perceive our natural intimacy
How we hear, see, smell, touch, taste
Each other, feel for the other
because nature and humanity
Are lovers

Love takes courage
It is complicated
Dare we love
knowing that even if all ends
Love is all that mattered

  1. Love is a risk and a dare..it fluctuates like nature and yet perhaps even in the bumpy storms.. the foundations of love and earth cannot be shifted

  2. Oh I do believe that nature care very little for humanity... One day it might shake us off like an old dog does with fleas... So maybe it's just us who need to be better in understanding that we are nature's guest.

  3. My “feeling” is that all things are alive and conscious, but as to whether this is true, I have nothing to back it up but a wish…I try to avoid thinking of humans as one thing as nature as another, but it’s hard to talk about nature without speaking of it as if it were separate from us…I rather suspect that in every single thing that exists lies the whole of existence. I mean by this that we ARE nature and nature IS us, in the same way that a drop of water IS the sea. The extent to which I succeed in thinking this way is the extent to which I avoid the fear of death.

  4. I think I would take the challenge of the dare. We can learn much from nature. Love does take courage, but I think it is worth the risk.

  5. WOW! My all-time favourite of your poems, my friend. Powerful and true. It would be hard for humankind to admit that nature has consciousness (and she has!), we it would have to look at its participation in the ravaging of Mother Earth. I love the thought that nature forgives our ignorance....and agree that love is all that matters, no matter what. This is my fave Poem of the Week!

  8. I am sure that nature has consciousness. And is infinitely more special (and wise) than we are.
This is a beautiful encapsulation of truth. Thank you.

  12. This brought a lump to my throat, Myrna. As one gets older - my hubby will be 70 in a few weeks - one does have such thoughts, knowing that eventually it will - sadly - end, with one or the other of us left behind ... and alone.

  13. I like the verse, Dare we imagine nature has a consciousness. Also, I liked, Nature as our elder...as it forgives our ignorance.

This really is a wonderful poem.

I use to think that kindness is all that mattered in the end. However, its quite amazing really, in spite of all, how it's love that reigns above all.

  14. the beautiful poem reminds me of the verses of Vedanta where the sages sing and praise of the cosmic consciousness manifested as the universe...

Like to think that love irrespective what happens is always uppermost in one's mind. It has to be that way. How true Myrna!

I have thought about this on many of my bike rides it's a profound thought. I think so but especially that we, as a race, are not as special as we think. With our violence and need to knock down nature and each other, to make everything ours, is very short sighted and not at all special. Loved this.

  18. I like how you make the nature alive and having consciousness...I believe it has it. It has energy, vibrations and aura too. I feel your peaceful words, nice balance and wisdom in your poem, Myrna. Thank you for sharing!

  19. Love should conquer all but humanity loves to destroy without compassion for others whether is be their fellow men or the natural world around us. Nature will succeed in the end as it will adapt humans have less chance.
