to beauty of the setting sun
waving goodbye colors in unabashed, brazen,
brilliant, confident conceit.
I am the insecure lover watching her beloved leave,
knowing? hoping? I hear
his silent promise to return again
tomorrow.
If tomorrow comes, I'll bask in sun's rays
once again feeling the high
of his grandiose splendor,
comforted by his constant loyal repetition,
but afraid of certainty
because I'm the lover who will one day
break the promise,
will wave goodbye with good intention
never to return
never to return
tomorrow.

Agh. So, it is. We are ever hopeful though. This is lovely. I read a wonderful poem by W.S. Merwin the other day about the anniversary of his death (to come.) It is a very interesting notion, and your take on it is so much your own, but so universal. K.
ReplyDeleteheavy...maybe it is going to the reunion yesterday and seeing so many gone already that i went to school with...we only have today...we can not bank on tomorrow....today is what we have...
ReplyDeleteThere is always tomorrow for one who believes.. Nice poem :)
ReplyDeleteOh, this is so poignant, Myrna. Sunsets are my favorite and we dont get many where I live, the trees and mountains block them out.........love the idea of the watcher as the "insecure lover watching her beloved leave"......and then you turn it around in the last stanza to your own leaving. Powerful writing.
ReplyDeleteAnd whyis that? Do we fear the non-return so much that we haveto do it before it is done to us? Enjoy the sun's goodbye alone without fear.
ReplyDeletei'm addicted to the setting sun as well :) there's nothing like it.
ReplyDeleteI liked thinking about your poem, Myrna. I am especially moved by the idea of leaving (as the setting sun does) with good intentions of returning.....but someday it will not; or, more probably, it will set but we won't be around to see its beauty.
ReplyDeleteI too love the setting (and the rising) sun. The colors are glorious and inspiring. I like how this led you to ponder on what is eternal and our mortal condition, but not in a sad way.
ReplyDeleteI like to believe that this love with beauty is eternal and we will drink to our fill in the next lives too :)
ReplyDeleteeach and every day we have on this earth is grace - and it's good to live with that awareness that we're gonna have to leave one day - and maybe suddenly - carpe diem...
ReplyDeleteI wonder at the way we have good intentions--and when we fail to follow through, how it affects others--really an evocative piece Myrna--one of your best that I have read
ReplyDeleteSomehow we are all going to decide not to return.. the sun will though.. and maybe in the setting sun we can connect to all souls that have decided to break the habit of returning.
ReplyDeleteI'm addicted too...to Nature.. :-) and for the lovers and believers..tomorrow always comes... :-)
ReplyDeletepoignant and beautiful dear Myrna… yes someday we must all say goodbye to the sun.
ReplyDeletePerhaps we secretly worship the sun. We exist only because it rises and sets unmindful of us even though it enflames and empowers us. Beautiful piece of poetry Myrna.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the poem and the sunset. So much going on here with the sunset, the return or will we and lovers parting...lots of levels here...
ReplyDeleteParticularly poignant for me as a friend's funeral is today. Life is short. Lovely poem Myrna.
ReplyDeleteLike the opening of a flower, this confession reveals itself petal by petal until its fullness is revealed.
ReplyDeleteWonderful imagery and expression in this poem.
