There's a pub in space where you musn't go
if you like muted lights, intimate private booths
where you could whisper lies, drink
colorful, syrupy potions with little umbrellas to hide
false spirits that can make you high
then drop you like a splat from a bird
who laughs at you as you wipe your eye,
because you think you're so cool.
No, this pub's not for those who seek pleasure,
in superficial, shallow exchange of a one night stand,
or a quick nightcap to bring on sleep,
to dream impossible dreams of nothingness,
to find false peace.
This pub is rough, meant for those so tough
they can endure the pain of others,
as well as clap for the rapture of their joy,
the insanity of their sanity,
the happiness within their sorrow,
the animal within their humanity,
the raw truth in their souls.
OK. Go! If you insist, but be prepared.
Give up everything except the heart you beat.
Allow your eyes to be receptors absorbing
divergent paths you'll cross,
shed all the faces that mask your glow,
get drunk with words,
then pass out or sober up.
Either way it's poetic justice
you'll find
in this pub in space
where poets, such as you,
like to go.
(Cheers to Dverse Poets Pub!)
get drunk with words! How perfect for a Poets Pub celebration- wonderful - K
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful ride you took me on here.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, to that pub. Its rough trade and its diamonds. Its tragedies and its joys. And its vitality.
ha. no pleasure in superficial and shallow exchanges....for sure....rough and tough to endure...yet warm and soft enough to be welcoming to the newbie...coming in to give it a try....i like that shedding as well....
ReplyDeleteI love the ode to the pub Myrna ~ I specially like this part so much:
ReplyDeleteAllow your eyes to be receptors absorbing
divergent paths you'll cross,
shed all the faces that mask your glow,
get drunk with words,
Thanks for being part of the community ~
Yep--we are willing to drink a bit of the pain and the joy of others. This pub offers such therapeutic acceptance. I'll take a double of that!
ReplyDeleteBetter than a real pub, right?
ReplyDeleteHa, "get drunk on words, then pass or sober up" made me smile. I really like the divergent paths we all have the opportunity to come across at dVerse. Nicely done here Myrna.
ReplyDeleteOh I so love "This pub is rough, meant for those so tough
ReplyDeletethey can endure the pain of others,
as well as clap for the rapture of their joy,
the insanity of their sanity,
the happiness within their sorrow,
the animal within their humanity,
the raw truth in their souls."
That is exactly what it is like.
drunk with words... oh yes... and rough as well sometimes... i was never really into shallow things...ha
ReplyDeletedrunk with words... let those sober truths pour out
ReplyDeletePoetry can be raw but beautiful none the less. Excellent work here!
ReplyDeletei love it..no cover charge..it's free..poetry at heart..speaks..but does not buy!
ReplyDeleteLovely images about the Pub--very heartfelt and apt. k .
ReplyDeleteOh, I like the imagery in this. I am transported somewhere between the worlds of Douglas Adams and Dr. Who. Perfect for a SciFi fan like me! Especially love the last line:
ReplyDelete"Either way it's poetic justice
you'll find
in this pub in space
where poets, such as you,
like to go."
And meet poets like you - what truth, what fun, what a blast these three years have been. No wonder it's worth it to keep on keeping on! Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteHow clearly you characterize the Pub and the time we spend here sharing our rough and polished works and coming back for more. The Pub tenders are listeners and pretty fine poets themselves.
ReplyDeleteI was about to protest 'it's not so rough' (thinking of unkind feedback and criticism), and then I got the meaning of the poem - better late than never. Definitely not a place for pretentiousness, though, otherwise you get that birdy splat...! Loved that.
ReplyDelete"Allow your eyes to be receptors absorbing
ReplyDeletedivergent paths you'll cross,"...to build up that wonderful community spirit...beautifully expressed Myrna..
Absolutely brill! A poem like this is such a pleasure. And this stanza -
ReplyDeleteThis pub is rough, meant for those so tough
they can endure the pain of others,
as well as clap for the rapture of their joy,
the insanity of their sanity,
the happiness within their sorrow,
the animal within their humanity,
the raw truth in their souls.
FANTASTIC.....................
From one verse to the next, you never know if you will find yourself falling over, a bit more than tipsy, or blinking away the effects feeling as though you are awake for the first time. That is definitely poetic justice and a pub not for the weak of heart. very nicely said.
ReplyDeletevery fun storytelling. your wisdom is braided throughout. i really enjoyed it. sharing work is mighty tough for the vulnerable artist.
