I saw a lizard today.
"It's good luck,"
Grandma used to say.
She said lots of things like:
"Forget about your aspirations.
Get used to being poor,
avoid disappointment."
"If you dream of weddings
someone's gonna die."
"A red sky brings rain."
I don't believe her anymore.
Still, think she was right about lizards.

ha. we used to have them all over when we lived in FL...my cat used to eat them...perhaps it brought her luck enough to escape that alligator attack

ReplyDeleteGrandmas say the darndest things, I guess. Superstitions are so common among indigenous cultures. My grandma would say that singing while doing the dishes meant not being able to have kids. Not true for me.
ReplyDeleteI've always heard "red skies at night, sailors delight - red skies at morning, sailors take warning". I think that was from my mother though. I also heard not to cross my eyes because they would "stick that way". Uh huh.
ReplyDeleteAh grandmas and their superstition stuff.. good thing we know better now, uh? Have a lizardicious weekend!!
ReplyDeleteGood Ol' Grandma. :) We were told to not talk on phones during the lighting. Which, IS good advice. I just keep forgetting that it doesn't apply to cell phones. My kids think I'm strange when I say "It's lightening, GET OFF THE PHONE!"

Ahhh, memories of the old sayings we've never forgotten. I love what OJ said about have a lizardicious weekend! A+ !!
ReplyDeletefunny, all the superstitious sayings from our grandmothers and mothers...every once in a while, I can't help but by into one or two...perhaps out of habit, or simply wanting to feel close to them.
ReplyDeleteI wonder about the experiences that cause our elders to encourage us to limit our dreams. So painful. Still, that lizard is all about now.
ReplyDeletemyrna, i love this poem! ah, true love. if you dream of weddings, someone's gonna die, whoosh.
