GROWTH?

Once, a teacher punished me for humming an annoying tune during quiet time. I didn't do it! The boy who really did the humming laughed. "That's life. It strengthens you," says the voice of wisdom.

But if life's not fair, how can it be just?
Life doesn't consult the scale to create poetic justice.
The sun shines equally on those who are ethical and kind
as it does on those who would prefer to live in darkness.
Too often, justice is absent from structures feigning impartiality.
Intelligentsia argue about its origins, cannot prove its blindness or if it's merely guided
by suppositions myopically slanted.

Still I'm glad for complicated idea(l)s that challenge humanity,
a child striving to reach adulthood.

  2. Beautiful! Especially wise to think that
"The sun shines equally on those who are ethical and kind
as it does on those who would prefer to live in darkness."

It is so hard to think on these things, but necessary as we grow up and quite often while living the adult life. I love the halting pace and tone of this poem as it holds justice up to scrutiny.

  3. You know, Myrna, you are a wise woman! I see this time and time again in your poetry. So true that life is not fair, so how can it be just indeed! The sun does indeed shine on everyone...which may not be fair either. And those who strive to be 'impartial' often are the least impartial of all...with their own agenda. I commend your thoughts here. Bravo.

  4. Fair and just are not always the same.

This one really made me think...both the good and the bad in it...but with a smile at the humming. Oh, to live in the days when humming was the big problem in classrooms, or running in the hall, or chewing gum! Wasn't that long ago, was it?

  5. Myrna,

Your excellent words prompted me to think of the whole situation with justice; indeed, the sun does shine on everyone, irrespective of their stance in life. Of course, we often wonder about some bizarre judicial decisions, which seem to go against our instinct for justice and fairness. It seems to be how life is viewed, either with clear, or warped vision..

  6. This is an inspiring poem.. with a thought provoking message :D These lines I adore:

Actually.. poetic justice takes place.. around the clock.. in every corner of the world.. but we as humans.. tend to over look it... as life passes by.. what was considered heart breaking... evaporates as the pain leaves a lesson..!
    Lots of love,

  8. Life is not fair. However how we react to adversity will show our true colours.

  9. There is no justice in life. We can only aim for making things more just than they are.
Children understand everything from the beginning because they have not lived long enough to be skilled in the art of deception...note, it was a child who pronounced the emporer had no clothes on ! Good poem.

  11. "The sun shines equally on those who are ethical and kind / as it does on those who would prefer to live in darkness."...justice seems to be as impartial as the sun in giving and it depends on us how we use such force...this one's a thought provoking write Myrna

  12. Myrna we have similar themes today. Equality isn't justice.

  13. It's a harsh lesson for a child to learn isn't it? Life's not fair and it incenses a child's natural sense of justice.

  14. "Too often, justice is absent from structures feigning impartiality."... the principles of impartiality and injustice applies everywhere and the cycle continues ...How tragic! Good one, Myrna!

  16. Myrna, you raised a thought that mystified me as I read your poem. a lot of us would say that life is unfair...so is there justice then in life? i know, i know it's there but just thinking of those times when things are reality instead of fairy tales or myths or movies. wait, i think my brain just answered it for me.... duh, God (if you believe in Him or some other deity) will do it for us. lol i love poems that help us learn new things or think hard to expand our brains. sorry if I'm confusing you at the moment but thank you so much for this. cheeers!!!

  17. Hi Myrna, I pored over your poem and read it and re-read it a couple of times. I think while I agree with some of your thoughts, I believe that it is up to us as individuals to try and make this world a fairer place. If we do it for ourselves and family and friends, somehow I think the world is made better and more just and life fairer... Great poem because it made me think!
