MISSING

(photobucket)

He's scared, especially at dawn when an unlit sun rises, illuminating nothing.
He does what he must.  He feigns brightness, which when not real looks stark, glaring, more like pulsating neon, not true light.

Some think he's standing at the crossroads, after taking little steps that could only lead to hell.  He alone, knows though, that not even evil options remain.  There is no road to stand on, not even one that burns.

In the mirror he sees a loser lost, a counterfeit person, fooling the fools who think he's alive.  But he's dead, and death's memory is dead, so he can't remember life.

Rigor mortis impedes love's penetration.
Those who care sit at his living-dead wake, wishing for powers of resuscitation because words prove insufficient to spark his glow, so hard to birth from darkness.

And while his little girl tries to be cute enough to make him seek reason, despondently he smiles, takes a drink from his tenth glass of liquid spirit and continues to pursue his disappearance.

  1. Rigor mortis impedes love's penetration....great line, and truth that...what a sad situation, sounds like depression has a pretty good hold on him...i feel for him, knowing how hard it is...and for his little girl watching it....

  4. Oh that is a sad life he lives. Yes, he is lost, especially if even his little girl's love isn't enough to save him.
    Very touching.

  5. This is sad, but not all hope is lost. Where there's life, there'still hope and he has someone who loves him, if he wakes up and doesn't destroy it. Great piece!

  6. To feel lost and aimless, losing memory is to live like a dead person. The ending lines are well crafted ~

  7. I think you have articulated precisely what it is like living with someone with depression. Their misery is evident, your ability to uplift them or give them a raison d'etre is useless. No wonder, it leads to desperate acts sometimes fruitful and sometimes not.

  8. Dearest Myrna,
Very moving write today. Sadly, imperfection and sin brings all of the sadness we have or face. You know what they say about losing the mind. Thanks for sharing this post that is filled with facts and truths.

  11. You've really gotten into the skin of a dark soul...and while nothing can spark that light, the portrait is sad but self-condemning not judgmental, which only makes the detail more damning. An excellent piece of narrative poetry.

  12. How sad to live a life like that. It was dark and brooding the way you wrote it Myrna.

  14. It's a despondent feeling. The man is not quite ready to give the best. All so sad for the little girl. Nicely done Myrna!
