LACHRYMAL

source

I thought it was over,
my sensitivity magnifying,
interpreting any little sadness as big
giving me heart problems.
But no. My heart's beating,
its bleeding continues excessive.
Blood's water easily spills
from my eyes that see too many
microscopic reasons to cry,
as if my tears
recognize the aggregate weight
of earth's sorrow.

Why?
I thought age would make me wise
enough to know futility of tears.
But no, my crying may never be over.

So instead of fighting my tearful nature,
I'll accept that I cry
because the world is sad.
It's joy is weighted down by heavy dust.
I'll pretend my tears can cleanse it,
fantasize that when I die,
I'll return as morning dew
to cry again and again.

  1. I so relate to thispoem. When I was young and strong, I rarely cried, was likely too stoic. As I have aged, the tears come often and easily, and for the same reason as yours - the earth is so full of sorrow. Fortunately, of beauty too. But the wiser we grow, the more the unnecessary cruelty and injustices pierce our souls. One of my faves of yours, Myrna, and I have so many faves.

  2. I actually envy people's tears... I believe it could relieve some of that pain inside... I blame being brought up a man, where tears are banned.

    1. The idea of no crying because of being a man always saddens me a little. If feels as if culture takes some of a person's humanity away, by refusing him to act naturally.

  3. What a beautifully honest poem - I agree with the others - to cry is to be human in the very best way because it is feeling connected in a way perhaps - to sadness..joy.. Being..and you are - wonderful!

  5. I look at sad tears (and angry ones) as toxins which need to be shed.
And the happy ones are the counterbalance.
Beautiful and heartfelt write. Thank you.

  6. I have always been a person of tears I associate myself with the weeping willow. Tears of joy and sadness they just seem to flow like a fountain.

  7. Oh, this is so beautiful, Myrna. Do continue to cry....it is part of being human, and if a person cries they really FEEL. There really IS so much to cry about really. And yes, I can picture you returning as morning dew. There could be worse options. Smiles.

  15. I don't cry much, mostly because doing so gives me a huge headache. But a good cry can be cleansing. Like your poem suggests, "the world is sad"... there is a lot of sorrow to cry clean.
