47 YEARS

Romantic couple in Carlsbad, California

My wedding anniversary was in January.  I'm finally honoring it in this little poem.  Yes, 47 years of  trials, challenges,  fun and happiness.  We've lived through financial difficulties, raising a spirited child, tough professions, health issues, caring for in-laws and so many other issues.  But, throughout we've been so fortunate to remain best friends.  I am so thankful for my love and my story, which I'm not telling here but am just noting my gratitude.

***

Never look straight at the sun!
Its radiance can make you blind
Like the faith in which we stared
When the sun imprinted us
With yellow beams of hope
for a marriage full of fun.

Were we ever that young?

Yes. We trusted the sun would always shine
Though such naïveté could not survive
Those cloudy, rainy times of flood,
Illusions drowning.
During those days we began to understand
Not just the sun, but WE
Must reflect light.

Now after so many years of calm and stormy weather
We've learned, unlike the sun
our love never sets, it thrives
even in darkness of night.
