MY LOVE OF ANIMALS

Those who visit me are probably tired of seeing pictures of my dogs.
So these are my daughter's little dogs - Max and Mrs. Wiggles.

I live with a couple of animal ambassadors,
teachers really, who have helped me see
the wonder of their kingdom.
My love for them has leaped
into realms I didn't understand.
They've showed me how to love
a hummingbird for it's fragile beauty,
to fear ferocity of a bear, while admiring it's strength,
to listen to whale song, interpret it's artful expression,
to know the yearning of coyote's howl.
They've even helped me have compassion
for the ugly, dirty roach, who exists not by choosing,
but in oblivious, ignorant innocence.
Little by little I'm accepting mystery,
that there's a gift in all animals,
a contribution to this whole planet.

I am grateful.
My dogs subdued their wildness
but exposed my own.
I am now more aware
of the nature of my humanity,
the animal in me.

  3. Wow!This is such a heartwarming poem :D especially love this part:

a hummingbird for it's fragile beauty,
to fear ferocity of a bear, while admiring it's strength,
to listen to whale song, interpret it's artful expression,
to know the yearning of coyote's howl.

    Beautifully expressed!
    Lots of love,
    Sanaa

  4. I like that there is a gift in all animals & that each contributes to the planet. Part of my own poem had to do with that too. The coyote & the skunk are not my favorites, but they definitely have their role. I like that you are aware of the nature of your humanity, the animal within you. I think when we look at ourselves in that way we are the better for it!

  5. I love that you chose your dogs. Mine also, those present and past, have taught me so much. I agree that there is wonder in all creation though sometimes I have to ask the Creator about earwigs that destroy my flowers.

  6. Not sure what happened to my first post, but, in rereading, this made me stop and think twice:

for the ugly, dirty roach, who exists not by choosing,
    but in oblivious, ignorant innocence

  11. Certainly all of nature is our teacher. I love how you end this with you getting in touch with your own "wildness" with the help of your dogs.
