|Those who visit me are probably tired of seeing pictures of my dogs. |
So these are my daughter's little dogs - Max and Mrs. Wiggles.
I live with a couple of animal ambassadors,
teachers really, who have helped me see
the wonder of their kingdom.
My love for them has leaped
into realms I didn't understand.
They've showed me how to love
a hummingbird for it's fragile beauty,
to fear ferocity of a bear, while admiring it's strength,
to listen to whale song, interpret it's artful expression,
to know the yearning of coyote's howl.
They've even helped me have compassion
for the ugly, dirty roach, who exists not by choosing,
but in oblivious, ignorant innocence.
Little by little I'm accepting mystery,
that there's a gift in all animals,
a contribution to this whole planet.
I am grateful.
My dogs subdued their wildness
but exposed my own.
I am now more aware
of the nature of my humanity,
the animal in me.
