I sing to her.
Regardless of her status as possession,
I think of her as free.
She sings to me,
to all her children's hearts beating
to her magic, no matter how far
away we've gone.
I feel her gentle lullaby breathing,
the way a mother creates invisible cord
that binds allegiance to love.
I'm now wrapped in the colors of another flag,
but the winds will fly my song to her,
to mesh with the canopy of songs
in the constantly clear sky
that covers her waves.
I was born in a flowery garden of magical beauty.
That land is the daughter of the sea and sun,
the daughter of the sea and sun.

Puerto Rico means 'rich port'.
Oh how lovely this is. So stunning and full of pride and love.
ReplyDeleteHeartfelt and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHome always anchors us doesnt it? No matter how far away we go...
Oh how beautiful this is, and how one can feel your heart singing through these lines, "daughter of the sea and sun". What a magical childhood you must have had there.
ReplyDeleteOh! Oh! Oh!

that I seek.
daughter of the sea and sun
What lovely lyrics and I like the rather playful music to the national anthem as well. Nice how the echo at the end of your verse mimics that of the anthem. Even far from home, I can hear the music deep within you.
This was a fun, yet touching read; very nice take on the anthem prompt. I'm grateful you identified your paradise as Puerto Rico, even though the poetic ambiguity works well within the poem.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, this is gorgeous. I will come back to read this again and again. I love it; what a beautiful poet you are!
ReplyDeleteI love this:

How lovely to feel that song, calling you home no matter how far away you've gone, even when wrapped in another flag. That is so beautiful.

Yes.. perhaps the best
ReplyDeleteanthems will be no
anthems but the
one that
appreciates
and praises the
Nature of Earth
we stand upon
that gives
us
our
very life..
THAT is certainly
the Anthem that
is THE core of me..
along with the
freedom that
comes
often
standing
upon blood..
flesh and bones
as well making FREE..:)

ReplyDeleteI love what you did with the Puerto Rican National Anthem. Though you are now 'wrapped in the colors of another flag,' I can see that Puerto Rican heart!
ReplyDeleteA warm anthem so beautifully sung, Myrna!
