I just said, "No", politely.
But my response did not fit,
what she expected to hear.
No, I didn't choose to see a show,
go where she wanted me to go,
or do whatever anyone thought
would work best for me
to make my life flow.
I say "No" frequently now
that I'm certain I know
how precious is my YES.
(Brian at Dverse Poets asks us to write about our philosophy.)
A no to one thing is a yeah to another. Good job not letting someone else choose your life for you
ReplyDeleteSooo important!
ReplyDeleteI think learning to say and mean NO is a wise move. We can't please a lot of people all the time ~ Good one Myrna ~
ReplyDeleteAmen to that! Sticking to the essentials, we cannot go wrong.
ReplyDeleteOoh, this is really good:
ReplyDelete"I say "No" frequently now
that I'm certain I know
how precious is my YES."
No is such a hard word to learn. And a harder one to stick to. Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteah yes - not everyone is happy with a NO - esp. when they were used for a long time to that person saying yes - our no's are important to make room for the things we really wanna do
ReplyDeleteI loved this.. the importance of making choices.. no matter how difficult the situation is.. one must learn to hear and accept the answer that we give to them.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully penned!
Lots of love,
Sanaa
another pearl of wisdom Myrna...one has to learn to say No...
ReplyDeleteAs a young man I learned, "Thank you, but no" with a smile - but some people force me into "What part of no is unclear to you?" or "If I'm not going to do it, the reason is immaterial"
ReplyDeleteWell said. Smiles...>KB
ReplyDeletefun read... reminds me of watching children
ReplyDeleteYou final stanza was killer, really touched me. My sweet wife when she will not agree to something I want her to do, & I ask WHY, she always smiles & says, "Because I said NO instead of YES." A strong confidant lady, this philosophy brought her through the rearing of three daughters, 6 grandchildren, & one husband.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, this is the absolute BEST!!!! "Now that... I know how precious is my YES!" You have said it all so perfectly.
ReplyDeleteNo.. a treasure.. an oasis of freedom in
ReplyDeletea sea of crashing waves that
know no freedom..
NO.. i love the
yes.. of no..
and YES
almost
literally
kills me..:)
It can be frustrating -- or worse -- when others don't hear and heed our polite "No." I like the lament of not saying "No" forcefully enough before, followed by the change in position in the last stanza. Peace, Linda
ReplyDeleteat the crossroad - only we can choose the destination that is right for us and sometimes we MUST say No. I am glad you found your voice..hugs..
ReplyDeleteMyrna, I agree with you about the importance of being able to say no. Our time is precious, and we have the right to decide how we want to spend it. I think this comes with a certain amount of experience living.
ReplyDeleteYes. Learning to say no is a powerful thing. And then how precious becomes the "yes." Thank you.
ReplyDeleteOne certainly has a right to be given the privilege of choice! Great thoughts Myrna!
ReplyDeleteHank
Maybe age helps one in being able to say no. I know it has helped me in that way, and in my ability to see below the surface and to take unpopular stands.
ReplyDeleteDon't let others trick, coerce, or guilt you into a reluctant yes. Very wise to know when and how to say no.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I think sometimes we say yes when we don't even realize... Maybe a few "no's" are necessary to slow us down and redirect us to some more valuable and precious things to say yes to.

ReplyDeleteDetermination, that's what this poem conveys. Thanks, I loved it.
