SUNDAY MORNING

Outside, quail chirp happily.
They sing a boisterous disturbance
to my silent home where I sip coffee
as thoughts bead a circle of mantras in my mind.

Am I praying?
when I think of nature shriveling,
of viruses thriving while survivors
survive but aren't exactly living,
when people are losing their heads,
because others see only one shape
to the diamond they call god?
I breathe my desire for peace
in all these things.

Then I listen to the sermon of the birds,
proclaiming their faith.
"You are a song," they say.
"Chirp loud, your best hymn."

  1. Ah, I think sometimes we pray in the thoughts that we think. This is not prayer, but prayer nonetheless. And perhaps a sermon of birds speaks well the message that God would like us to hear!

  2. OH! MY! GOD! MYRNA! This is the best thing I have read today and I need it so much. I LOVE "You are a song. Chirp loud, your best hymn." That is what we have to do in the face of all that is happening. This is a WONDERFUL poem with a beautiful message. It speaks straight to my heart - and my hope. Thank you so much. It is a gift to read it.

  15. Birds are symbols of spiritual messengers because they exist between earth and heavens, as do our thoughts and prayers. Very well woven poem/prayer.

  17. Myrna,

I have the same thoughts as Mary in her comment. I regard nature and birds in particular, as providing the environment in which to connect to one's God, if that is what one wishes to do..Some silent moments are wonderful on a Sunday...
