MY SELFISH ENDEAVOR

All writing is a form of revelation.
Black letters exposing
or hiding the neon colors
of humanity blinking in our core
with varying brightness.

The pen as sword, a mirror
of shiny metal reflecting truth.
Oddly, at times, a shield
of such intricate design,
no one can see through.

I confess for me writing's a quest
to sharpen my sword enough to pierce
any shield that hides me.
I may find myself dwelling in letters, words, lines,
even in the white blank spaces.

Can you see me?

  1. Myrna, that last stanza is so powerful and raw. Such an authentic voice comes through here. It is a joy to read!! Thank you for sharing this so openly with us.

  2. Oh yes! I can see you. "I may find myself dwelling....even in the white blank spaces." I do like that a lot. That void space, that negative space, that silence between the notes.....wonderful. aka kanzensakura

  3. So true about writing, Myrna. Even when a writer does not write about himself/herself he /she reveals something with the words chosen. I like the idea that writing is a quest to sharpen your sword......... And, yes, I can see you. Smiles.

  5. Love it. And the image matches beautifully. The rainbow peeking out from dark clouds... magical.

  8. Myrna, interesting that we both had confessions in the form of words.

  9. we often write ourselves into a fiction of who we want to be - but the sharpness of the pen can go deep and let feelings out too.

  10. it takes some courage to allow this shield to get holes so people can see and feel us... always a bit of a risk but rewarding and freeing as well

  11. Powerful lines! Writing is so primitive at times... It opens things that we have locked up and otherwise forgotten.

  12. The writing is really ourself and sometimes even in our most veiled writing we are exposed - very keen observation.

  14. Yes, I see you! I especially resonate with "for me writing's a quest to sharpen my sword enough to pierce any shield that hides me." That nails it! Me, too.

  16. The genuine honesty of your confession is breathtaking. I find myself relating to it as I reread it, employing writing as both an excercise of personal empowerment but also as a defense mechanism or a veneer to crouch behind. This is truly beautiful, Myrna.
