MAYBE THERE'S NO NEED TO SLAY THE DRAGON

We've come to believe that all dragons died in fiction.
They didn't.  They're here, roaming, breathing fire.
Not invisible, not hiding or only coming out
in the darkest hours of the night,
when coyotes howl in fear, not used to being prey.
whales and dolphins leave the ocean,
to escape boiling waters that can fry,
birds drop dead mid-flight due to terror epidemic
because they know dragons too can fly.
Yes, dragons are alive.

The knights, they live confused.
Most don't know who they are.
They think the world has changed
from times when only men ruled the castle,
religions clashed to prove a better god,
the poor paid for the living of the rich,
entertainment was about who competed, won,
made the kill.

But there are knights still brave, determined
to conquer their confusion, to perfect their armor
with wisdom of sight not might.
Their bravery is less about slaying,
more about staying in a different kind of fight
that sees the dragon, trains it, tames it,
doesn't steal its treasures,
but shares the wealth of dragons and people alike.
Yes, knights are still alive.

In the future, a long, long time away,
stories will unfold, tales
of our struggles and conquests  today,
how we deal with our dragons,
how we develop brave knights
during these Middle Ages.

  2. Ha, interesting, Myrna. Yes, someday they will look back on OUR years as the "Middle Ages" as well. Just as we look back at the past and perhaps make judgments, so will they look back at us. I do wonder what stories they will tell & who will be considered the bravest of knights.

  3. I like to believe that there are knights like that ~ This part resonated with me:

Their bravery is less about slaying,
more about staying in a different kind of fight
that sees the dragon, trains it, tames it,
    doesn't steal its treasures,
but shares the wealth of dragons and people alike.
    Yes, knights are still alive.

Good to see you Myrna ~

  4. the leaders, those who are unafraid to go against an army to stand for what he believes... those are knights. And dragons, to me, are those who don't have the courage to stand for what's right, so they spread hatred instead... that's what I got from the tale, Myrna... smiles

  5. Dragons may have changed but they are still as frightening if not more! And I do hope you are right about these knights.

  6. This is uplifting, Myrna. When I researched medieval times, I wrote a different poem from the one I wound up posting - how peasants were organized into villages and owed rent and labour to the wealthy - not too different from now. I love how you point out years from now, people will be noting how we reacted to our challenges. Great perspective in this poem.

  7. oh i like how you took this into today and even the future...there are surely those today-knights that fight for a better future and yeah - the shape of the dragons seems to have changed but def. they're still around - and probably more than ever

  9. I think those kind of dragons of greed and power are the worst of them all. Wonderful way of responding to the prompt Myrna
