MEETING THE BUDDHA ON THE ROAD

I asked for coffee,
then noticed his smiley face -
a sun flower without stem,
atop his roly-poly body,
balanced by chubby arms extended,
ready to hug, if nothing else, the air.

He served ambrosia, to me,
a queen in shorts and teeshirt,
who just stopped to pee, pardon me, to rest,
get a fix of jo on the go
before continuing her long boring shlep
to visit her daughter, the princess.

It was only coffee really,
but he, so pure with joy of being
a helpful serf, persisted,
serving my royal self a feast
of humble, most sincere
hyperbolic good wishes.

I thanked him for my drink,
though he gave me so much more.
Rainbows, shimmering, sparkling
danced around me when I left.
