MY TWO GOOD FRIENDS

Each of our lives can tell a marvelous story.
Some of us dwell on good memories
others keep returning to tortures past,
as if pulled by threads of glue, stuck.

But not my good friends, Leroy and Daisy,
both mistakenly thrown out as trash,
not because their first humans
enjoyed being cruel, but because ignorance
fosters painful acts when people stay small,
before they grow enough to know things,

like the fact that we're all one
system within the larger cosmos,
or that kindness flows into the ethers,
then becomes like fodder
for all us animals
here on earth.

Leroy and Daisy never question their worth,
though to me they're treasures,
living jewels of joy, reflections of love,
who seem to value every moment they live,
confident in being who/what they are.
They're not even aware of how much they give me
or how their gifts expand exponentially.

I'm so glad Leroy and Daisy found me.

  1. I can feel your love for your beautiful dogs and gratitude in your words, Myrna. I hope that the people who once threw them out as trash have now grown up and will not repeat the same mistake. This is a cliche, I know, but their loss your gain.

  3. Well, you KNOW how much I love this poem, Myrna! Especially "ignorance
fosters painful acts when people stay small,
before they grow enough to know things". And that kindness "becomes fodder" for we humans.......sigh. Loved this and especially the photo!!!!

  4. Oh yes abandoned pets are indeed lost treasures. So glad they found you! We also have a beloved dog that was "thrown out" and she is such a wonderful girl.

  6. God bless you Myrna for giving these sweeties a loving home. I am always amazed that these frightful humans have children. How do they differentiate between the treatment of children and animals I wonder?Seems so unnatural to me !

  7. Each word here is a treasure Myrna...the memories one has, the learning from age, to convert trash into treasure, each soul in the form of human or non-human,the love, companionship, gratitude everything in this poem....

  13. Leroy and Daisy make me smile, Myrna. So true that our pets never question their worth. They feel worthy, as they are. We humans could learn so many things from our pets who live each day in the moment and give us such gifts without even thinking about it. They are treasures indeed!

  14. the people stay small is intriguing. we have a say in our own growth development. i really like that, myrna. i have found that when humans care about the quality of life of their own animals, they begin to address their own quality of life as a result.

  16. This is just lovely, Myrna! Animals should never be trash, and those who consider them to be trash have still a lot of personal growing to do... I'm glad these two treasures found a comforting home and someone who appreciates and cares for them!

  18. I love this poem, and especially these lines:

    not because their first humans
enjoyed being cruel, but because ignorance
fosters painful acts when people stay small,
before they grow enough to know things,

    So wise!

Have you read Mary Oliver's collection of songs for dogs? I think you would like it.

I am glad your dogs found you.
