POETRY'S UTILITY

I should do something practical,
instead I read poetry
about love, beauty, puppies and pain.
Everyone has some of these,
but only some persist,
stay long enough to listen
to what no one understands,
with or without words.

I stop to think, knowing art
has less to do with thought
more to do with mystical connection
between artist and what is
life, death, the between.

Sometimes, I stop to watch
as poetry's stillness permeates
the earth, the wind, my breath,
creating perceptions of motion.
I think I see

I could do something tangible,
functional, but I read more,
learning to not make sense
of contradictions, absurdities,
lack, abundance, waste, nothing
and all that poets address.

What could be more useful?

  1. i love that you mention that connection between artist and life, death, the between, the things that happen...for me it is that what makes poetry real and worth spending time to write and read... good to see you in the pub for the opening myrna

  2. smiles...perhaps at times it would be better that we did something practical....or tangible but i think our time int he words fuels our own imagination and creative desire so there is probably plenty of tangible things that can come out of it...smiles.

  5. There are numerous times when we could do things that are more 'practical' but in the end I guess our soul also needs its own kind of nurture. Lovely poem, Myrna!

  9. I love this--how often do I think I should go do something useful as I sit and read poetry?

  10. I especially love your line about art being less about thought and more about mystical connection. I didnt realize that nearly as much before I began blogging and saw how our words draw kindred souls to us, as if we recognize each other's language. Cool poem, Myrna.

  18. I was just on my way to visit you and your message popped in my box. "knowing art
has less to do with thought
more to do with mystical connection
    between artist and what is
life, death, the between." so beautiful and true… and yes useful indeed.

  20. The beauty of poetry is that it has the ability to escape logic...

Logic..is helpful but not necessarily truth...

    Truth rings..

    Logic brings...

    but any way..have a great 2014!
