MY MOTHER'S VERSE

All she ever did was float
in sea of storms. Harsh waves
beat her body, crashed her youth,
worse, drowned her soul,
shrunk her.

One day, she woke up, still
floating, but in the sky.
Clouds (the puffy kind) cleansed
her wounds, the sun inflated her soul.
She grew big, grateful of magic
that flies, even over angry waters.

Never
did she win
awards, accolades, recognition,
though she learned to sing
one short verse, part of a long song.
She sang it perfectly
to the sea, the sky, to everything.

Singing, she floated away.

  1. Singing so perfectly to the sea and sky sounds like quite something to attain despite floating in the sea of storms in earlier life!

  3. Myrna, this is incredibly beautiful, and is an amazing tribute to your mother - how wonderful that though the waves crashed over her, she learned to sing-"to the sea, the sky, to everything." My kinda woman!!!

  7. That's really beautiful. I think many women's lives were like that, and maybe still are, and you've expressed it so well.

  8. Death must be such a relief for tormented souls. I guess all that weighed her down must have been left behind with her body. Only her soul's song would have remained. Beautiful poem!
