NOSTALGIA - 'CAUSE IT'S POINTLESS TO CALL IT GUILT

Each day I heard the bullet
It triggered the game,
I thought I knew the rules,
go fast, go.
in a flash
images blurred,
the prize too.
Couldn't stop,
working, working
efficiently.
(I thought I noticed your face
changing,)
quickly, I advanced
like the year, 1985 already
gone.
Lost.

Now I ponder, are memories real
or am I inventing?
you so cute, going to school,
discovering boys, clothes,
keeping scrapbooks of Menudo,
in love with the rest of your life,
still cocooned in possibility.
Me, wrapped in ignorant whirlwind
kicking up dust, clouding my vision
of you walking away from childhood
as I ran past,
trying to win
what?

I'll never know.

(Submitted to Poetry Jam.  The prompt is 1985)

  2. Those days when our children were "still cocooned in possibility" ~ not only their dreams but our dreams for them (yes, they were real.) Lovely poem.

  3. Sometimes with time I think memories blur a bit. In some cases this may not be bad. Smiles.
