OF LOVE AND ITS SURVIVAL

Hawaii

Look at us now,
sitting on recliners
watching a movie, holding hands
then sinning partners
drinking coffee before bed with
a little pastry that we shouldn't,
sometimes laughing at things
no one else understands
or walking in the park
silently observing
then talking, making dinner plans.
We're a mellow union
like the slumbering ocean
and the sleepy sinking sun.

But there have been storms
forcing us to surf waves
swelling, crashing, displacing
balance, lost, aerial,
blind we flew alone,
transforming the lover into 'other',
obstacle, enemy of the Self,
that we protected.

Wish I knew how
we've always returned to safety
together.

  1. smiles...it is a wonderful thing that you do...and i think in many ways it is the storms that we face together that can draw us closer and create those moments like your time on the porch...in the peace of just being together...smiles. nice piece myrna...

  2. I'd weather any storm with my guy. Have you read, They're eyes We're Watching God? Your scene reminds me of a terrible scene in the book and how much we can love and lose.

  4. Sounds like you've both earned the privelage to drink coffee before bed. I used to be able to do that, but ever since my pregnancies, I can't drink coffee after 3 in the afternoon.

  5. I am sure that in any long relationship there are storms, but what you have now seems wonderful to me. Coffee and sinning with a little pastry, holding hands....seems blissful to me. Beautiful poem of real life.

  12. Myrna, this is so comfortable and real. How lucky we are--those of us who enjoy this sort of love relationship. They take work, lots of it. There are moments when you just want to run away but then...it's worth it. Lovely expression of true love.
