APPRECIATION

Painting by Leovi

Every once in a while my life shrinks.
Its myopic view magnifies
hypnotically convincing me, (if only temporarily)
that what I see is real,
and all.

The minuscule piece becomes big.
I forget
other colors, textures, shadows, transparencies
that once were and could be again
when I stop the little living.

I tend to judge this as good or bad
when it simply is -
at times the ecstasy of the universe
in the bud of a flower,
or the pain of all suffering
in the instant I stump my toe.
Either way, I extract the juice of life
from these condensed times.

When life enlarges once again
I know
there is essence in the bigger picture.
And I'm glad.

(Leovi's paintings are the prompts for today.  Visit Dverse Poets to be inspired.)

Some of you may know that I've been moving.  It's been quite an experience and I lived in the little for a while.  But I'm ready to resume life in the large.  So happy to blog again. I am well.  Hope you are too.

  1. Funny how one's perspective changes with the big picture ~ Still it is always nice to appreciate the small lovely things like a bud ~

  2. Yes, I do think we need to recognize that some things just ARE...not good or bad...but just as they ARE. Well expresssed ideas in your poem.

  3. This works so well with the art. Sometimes the abstract startles us, as we can't arrive at a definitive understanding, but if we can manage to relax our mental constraints, it can open to a fresh, spacious world. Nicely written.

  4. our universes expand and contract at times....different circumstances play into that...i like how you say either way you extract the juice of life...there is essence in the big and the little...and appreciating where ever we are...smiles.

  9. I extract the juice of life
from these condensed times..this just boils it down to the essence of such times when someone has learned to face them open-minded...think we all know such times when things seem narrow and good to step out into the open again with the valuable lessons we learned in such places..so good to see you back writing again myrna...happy sunday...smiles

  12. This is so true. I always have to ask myself how important will (whatever) be a week, month, year from now? Will I even remember it?

  16. Myrna this is beautiful.. I am working on a meditation practice for The Healing Womb next week... this poem might fit in well with what I'll be teaching. May I have your permission to use it in a podcast (if it does work into the teaching as I suspect it might)? Attributing it to you of course! (If I use it I can even add a link to this post on the podcast page) send me a message and let me know:-)

  20. Your words remind me of when I have a teardrop that suddenly changes my vision and intensifies it very briefly as moves over my contacts. It sounds weird but the experience is actually really cool. Love this poem. To me it spoke of a change in perspective.
