CLEANSING MEMOIR

I like to write in the settled dust.
It lies so still, the way memories
rest on my chest and weigh me down,
layered particles of darkness, shadows
in cellular decomposition that evolve
in distortion.

My finger designs positivity, as words shove through
unenlightened specks, accumulated
like tiny feathers falling in slow motion
one atop the other. Not all are heavy
but after time, they grow into visible ugly mounds.

I like to see when words make paths, allowing
light's caress to zigzag making streaks within
the flecks of time.
Most of all, I like the surface to shine,
after a vigorous cleansing swipe that makes
the dust and the words disappear.

(Submitted to Dverse Poets where we're prompted to write about light and shadows.)

  1. i like the in the moment feel of this...the writing in the dust, how the words gain weight, make paths and then, the wiping both away..dust and words..getting a new view after having written the things off the soul..nice..you make the abstract very visible with this...

  5. Lovely poetry here, Myrna. Love the vision of writing in the settled dust....and also seeing the words make paths. But ha, I would rather the words not disappear with the dust. Smiles.

  15. when i was young i had an epiphany that dust was nature returning to stark human spaces, proof that ecology could return into even rooms without windows
