LADY OF THE ROCKS

Somewhere on the island of Hawaii.

Amid black rocks of earth's eruption, she sang.
Her incantation, barely audible to me, was clearly heard
by the wind and the sea.
Back and forth, jumping high they swirled
in joyful response, like a puppy to its master's call.
At least, that's what I thought I saw.

Magically her song infused itself in me,
and I knew
it invoked nature's power -
of rage, fire, destruction.
She asked for the killing
of fear,
the basis of all hate.

Lava flowed, etching the moment
over mountains of my heart
creating ashes of some feelings
that were already dark.

How long were we locked
by the mystery of time?
Ill never know that,
nor the lady of the rocks.

My husband and I like to explore out-of-the-way places.  We stopped here (while on vacation) to enjoy the sunset.  While I stood (respectfully away) in awe at this woman's private chant, my husband went off to take pictures.   The moment was hypnotic and I could swear the ocean and the wind really did respond to her song. I followed her when she finished to thank her and apologize for my intrusion, but  I didn't catch up to her.  She disappeared.

  4. Wow.... I wonder if she was meditating or, if she was practicing/exercising her vocal cords. Amazing thing to be witness to whatever it was. What a shame you never got to catch up with her and will never know. What a lovely write though :)

    of fear,
the basis of all hate." oh Myrna... what can I say... a prayer from your fingers, her lips, to God's ears?
