GRIEF

I watch my dogs at the end
of the day. Oblivious,
they play
not knowing you left.
Tired, I wait
for the sun
to go too,
as flashes of you
stream in final sigh
of fluid embrace.
And I sense the sounds
of colors clashing,
forming something new.
What strange transition,
vacuum packed awareness -
you are - absent
in the setting sun's
darkening hues.
Then, I watch
the dogs sleep, knowing
they'll play again
tomorrow.

  1. Myrna,

This is such a moving tribute to the one who has gone. I remember feeling this way when my own mother died seventeen years ago. I felt that I connected with her in quiet moments of reflection.
Indeed, the dogs will provide a kind of solice in your sad moments Myrna.
    Best Wishes, Eileen

  3. I specially like how captured this sad moment:

    What strange transition,
    vacuum packed awareness -
    you are - absent
    in the setting sun's
    darkening hues.

  4. Kind of like watching and hearing children in happy play when a dear one is now gone. I know this feeling well.

    Grief, so sad and numbing.

    Peace to you.

  5. My dear Myrna,
How wonderful you express the beauty of sadness. Yes, like Brian said...you "captured the moment so well"....with deep emotions.

  6. You are so stunning in this poetry and sadness. Still, there is something about that canine unconditional love that helps us go on. This is such beautiful poetry.

  8. They say that ignorance is bliss, and here you imbue that ignorance into those playful dogs, contrasting them to your own sad awareness. An interesting construct, and effective.

  9. Myrna I am sorry for your loss but like you have written life goes on. The dogs will play again tomorrow and the pain of losing will also ease with time.

  11. Foe me, dogs can convey that sense of animal tranquility that I guess resonates with the animal parts of human being. This poem has that very gentle tranquility that comes with self-awareness, and I enjoyed it very much.

  15. this is lovely, oh, to be a dog, to live life with such abandon, always, always in the moment.
the way you tie that in with grief is powerful and beautiful.
