THE DANCE

My husband bought me this painting/collage at the farmer's market. He said it reminded him of me. I decided to take that as a compliment in spite of the fact that I look nothing like the subject. Really! But I do like to think that rainbow colors flavor my life, that flowers pave my journey, that smiles are my signature and that I leap at the sound of music... and my life is a dance.

But the truth is I fall a lot. Sometimes the music is too low, too slow, too fast or I don't know the right steps. There's a constant melody though, that reminds me to incorporate the falls into the dance. It reassures me that all dancing is perfect.

"The dancer's body is simply the luminous manifestation of the soul."
Isadora Duncan

"Dancing is the poetry of the foot."
John Dryden

"It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance.
It's the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance.
It's the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give.
And the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live."

Excerpt from "The Rose", by Bette Midler

  1. oh man, do I dance.. I dance a lot... literally and figuratively, I dance. Your painting is beautiful, colorful, simple and joyful. Your post made me remember that it is in dancing with the right partner where true happiness is found.

  5. Dear Myrna:

I enjoyed this post: So many expressions here.

I was reminded of this lovely piece when I read your post. Hope you enjoy it as well.

Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round,
or listened to rain slapping the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight,
or gazed at the sun fading into the night?

You better slow down, don't dance so fast,
time is short, the music won't last.

Do you run through each day on the fly,
when you ask "How are you?", do you hear the reply?

When the day is done, do you lie in your bed,
with the next hundred chores running through your head?

You better slow down, don't dance so fast,
time is short, the music won't last.

Ever told your child, we'll do it tomorrow,
and in your haste, not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch, let a friendship die,
'cause you never had time to call and say hi?

You better slow down, don't dance so fast,
time is short, the music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere,
you miss half the fun of getting there.

When you worry and hurry through your day,
it's like an unopened gift thrown away.

Life isn't a race, so take it slower,
hear the music before your song is over.

    Joy always,
    Susan

  6. Oh, I think your husband is brilliant! The fact that he took the time to look at a picture and felt that there was something there that reminded him of you is the definitely a compliment. And I love the image and I love the text - he loves you very much I am sure.;))
Thank you for your wonderful comment on my latest post, the sentiments are mutual.;))

  7. When I first moved to Taos, so much of the sidewalks were broken. I was constantly stumbling, and maybe stumbling in my life as well. My prayer was to learn to walk gracefully in Taos, NM. Now many of the sidewalks are repaired, and I can walk more gracefully, my prayers were answered. I liked this post. Keep dancing!

  8. I did the twist a few times in the '60s, but didn't realize that my movements were supposed to correlate with the music, so it was nothing more than a vigorous athletic exercise that few girls wanted to participate in, and I soon gave it up. Now, I dance around the house sometimes, but Peggy says it looks like a potty dance. I tell her that I'm a Native American, and that's just how my people dance, and I'm going to have her busted for a hate crime. She still does it though.

  9. Myrna this is the way I dance too...I think really everyone, would find themselves in this. We all fall, we rise again to our own music, in our own time, our own graceless-full way.

  10. It's funny because that art piece looks like you even before I read the post. There's something of your spirit in it.
