THE BABY FROM HEAVEN

The puff of lint was almost invisible. Yet, he saw it, picked it up with his highest level of coordination and inspected it as if he was examining a precious gem. It held his attention for a few moments until it was time to taste it, but Mommy took it before it reached his mouth. Oh well, time to discover something new. Oh yes, the floor pattern was pretty interesting for a second, but now he sees an object with a beautiful design. It is colorful and has large ears and other things to pull and feel. His arms and legs somehow align in motion to propel him towards the object on the floor. He picks it up and discovers that it feels so soft, so gentle. He squeezes it almost as if wanting to mesh with it. Maybe it reminds him of something somewhere he loved but the memory is fuzzy now.

His intense explorations are interrupted by the arms that pick him up and transfer him to the high chair, where he is to eat his breakfast.

I observed in wonder as I reflected upon the reasons why I travel for hours to be in the presence of this baby. As a grandmother, I fight the inclination to say that he's extraordinary. He is to me, but I know he's just a baby doing the things babies do and in that sense he is ordinary, normal, just a human fulfilling the blueprint for human development.

So, why do I find him mesmerizing? I think it's because of his innocence, which is actually a form of wisdom I have long forgotten and now struggle to relearn.

"It is the nature of babies to be in bliss."
Deepak Chopra

Baby is my guru. He is the perfect model for me to learn how to live a spiritual life. He is aware of his surroundings and appreciates all he sees. He knows true freedom and laughs and cries as the emotions strike with no attempt to disguise them or bury them.

Baby teaches me to play, to have fun and enjoy the little things.

He knows when enough is enough and its time to rest.

He lives in wonder and is a wonder himself. I treasure the moments in which I can immerse myself in his innocence. It reminds me that Heaven is what we make it - a touch, a place, a thought, a prayer, a being, a baby.

"A baby is God's opinion that life should go on."

Carl Sandburg

  1. How absolutely adorable. I love being in the presence of babies too - they are our gurus for certain. Such wholeness!
